Hakushu was opened by Suntory in 1973 at the foot of the Southern Alps. Known as the forest distillery, it sits at about 700 metres surrounded by deep woodland and draws the natural water of the Southern Alps for its fresh, verdant style of whisky. A whisky museum stands on the grounds; paid tours run by reservation, with a restaurant and bar on site.
